Afghanistan Struck by Two Killer Quakes.

June 11, 2012 – Afghanistan Rocked by Two Killer Quakes: Scores of people are feared dead in an earthquake and landslide that buried 20 houses in northern Afghanistan on Monday, officials said. Details of the destruction were slow to emerge from the remote district. Rescuers have so far pulled two women’s bodies from the rubble of the landslide in Baghlan province and expect many others were buried, said provincial Gov. Abdul Majid. The U.N. confirmed one other death and said houses were destroyed across five districts.

An earthquake measuring a magnitude 5.4 struck the Hindu Kush region Monday morning, followed (27 minutes later) by a 5.7 quake, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Both were felt as far away as the Afghan capital, Kabul, where buildings shook. Baghlan province’s Burka district, the site of the landslide, is a remote collection of mountain villages. It takes more than two hours to drive the approximately 25 miles from the provincial capital of Pul-e-Khumri to the area. There are no medical clinics in Burka, said Dr. Salim Rasouli, so medics and ambulances were sent from the nearest city. “Right now our doctors, nurses and ambulances are at the site, helping people. As there is no communication system there, we cannot get the latest information on the casualties right now,” Rasouli said.

Because the quakes occurred at relatively shallow 15 kilometers ( 9 miles) they were much more destructive than deep quakes. The second quake struck at 9:59Am local time and was 5.7, preceded by a 5.4 magnitude tremor. It was 1:59AM in New York (June 11th), 12:59AM in Chicago, 11:59PM in Chicago (June 10th) and 10:59PM in Los Angeles. The Master of Disaster

China Just Made A Massive Play For Afghanistan’s Resources

petrochina china oil derricksRussia and China just indicated they’re planning to make a big move into Afghanistan.

As the War in Afghanistan winds down and the United States focuses on making final inroads economically, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) just made Afghanistan an observing member on Wednesday.

This could mean big things for Afghanistan, but might mean that the U.S. will get scooped on access to valuable natural resources

The SCO was founded in 2001 and is a multinational mutual-security organization made up of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. China played host this year to the yearly conference, and announced that Afghanistan would be made an observing member.

The group routinely denies the constant allegations that it’s a military bloc.

The group focuses on security concerns and economic cooperation. As China continues to invest internationally, the move to bring Afghanistan into the SCO as an observer is a bold move on the part of the central Asian co-op.

But China comes out as the big winner.

The move could also open up access to a chunk of a $10 billion loan that Chinese President Hu Jintao announced last week, money intended to support economic development among SCO member states.

China and Russia dominate the group, each with an immense economy compared to the other members and the ability to inject capital into neighboring countries as they wish.

This throws a wrench into American plans.

The recent prominence of the group — especially the warming relationship between Russia and China — presents a new consideration for United States foreign policy makers when planning strategies to remain economically significant in Asia.

China is going all in for Afghan natural resources for a really good reason, too.

The AP reported that firms from China have already moved into Afghanistan and plan to make a fortune off of that country’s ample mineral deposits — estimated to be worth anywhere from $1 trillion to $3 trillion.

China’s National Petroleum Corp currently has the largest foreign investment in Afghanistan, a $3.5 billion stake in a copper mine.

On June 30, 26-year-old Idahoan Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl will celebrate an important anniversary: his third year in captivity as an American prisoner of war.…

To advocacy organizations and to Bergdahl’s parents, it seems that his people and his government have forgotten him.

A spokesman for U.S. Central Command, John Wagner, said that Bergdahl is still believed to be held by the Haqqani network, a Taliban-affiliated insurgent group operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Other than the five videos released by the network between December 2009 and May 2011 showing Bergdahl and reports from Dec. 2011 that he had made an unsuccessful escape attempt, Wagner said no new information has emerged about his situation.
